Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

Medicare Advantage Plans—often called MA Plans or Part C—are offered by private, Medicare-approved insurance companies. These plans combine the benefits of Original Medicare with additional features and services.

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans include:

  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO)

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)

  • Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS)

  • Special Needs Plans (SNP)

  • Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans (MSA)

When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medicare-covered services are provided through that plan rather than through Original Medicare. Many of these plans also include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits such as dental, vision, or hearing care.

Because Medicare Advantage Plans are county-specific, your available options will depend on where you live in California. Comparing plans can help you find the right balance of coverage, flexibility, and cost for your healthcare needs.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

A Medicare Supplement Plan, also known as Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare to help pay for out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and are designed to fill the “gaps” that Medicare does not cover.

Key features of Medigap plans include:

  • Freedom to visit any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare.
  • Coverage that travels with you throughout the United States.
  • Standardized plan options (A through N) with predictable costs.

Unlike Medicare Advantage, Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage, so you would need to enroll separately in a Part D Prescription Drug Plan if you need medication coverage.

For many seniors who prefer flexibility and predictable expenses, a Medigap plan can be an excellent choice for supplementing Original Medicare coverage.

Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)

A Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) provides coverage for prescription medications and certain vaccines that are not included under Medicare Parts A or B. These plans help reduce the cost of prescription drugs, biological products, and select medical supplies that would otherwise need to be paid out of pocket.

Even if you do not currently take any prescription medications, it is wise to consider enrolling in a Part D plan. Having coverage in place protects you from unexpected medication costs in the future and helps you avoid potential late enrollment penalties.

Enrollment

You can begin the Medicare enrollment process three months before your 65th birthday and complete it no later than three months after your birthday. This seven-month window is known as your Initial Enrollment Period.

You can enroll by visiting the Social Security website, contacting your local Social Security office, or calling 1-800-772-1213. Enrolling during this period ensures your benefits begin as soon as you are eligible and helps you avoid late enrollment penalties.

If you miss the Initial Enrollment Period, you can sign up during the General Enrollment Period, which takes place each year from January 1 to March 31. Some individuals may also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if they meet certain conditions, such as losing employer coverage.

If you already receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, you may be enrolled automatically. In that case, your Medicare card will arrive in the mail about three months before your 65th birthday or after 25 months of disability benefits.
